Budget constraints delay Tenant Purchase Scheme

20 Mar 2013

The Ministry of Lands and Housing has not yet implemented the Tenant Purchase Scheme due to budgetary constraints.

Answering a question in Parliament, Minister of Lands and Housing, Mr Lebonaamang Mokalake said that required a seed capital of P600 million to enable Botswana Housing Corporation (BHC) to kickstart it.

Mr Mokalake noted that when the scheme was approved by government some three years ago, it was agreed that as economic situation improved, the requisite seed capital for the scheme would be availed.

“As the honourable member will be aware, the economic situation for the country has not yet improved. The scheme like many other projects is presently being kept in abeyance,” he added.

Francistown South MP, Mr Wynter Mmolotsi had asked the minister why he has not implemented the Tenant Purchase Scheme three years after President Lt. Gen Seretse Khama Ian Khama had announced during the State of the Nation Address. ENDS
