Education road map to success
19 Feb 2015
The Mayor of Sowa Town council, Mr George Maphane has said education is a road map which one has to strategically lay down in order to have a successful future.
Speaking at a two day Gweta all schools career orientation fair organised by the Village Development Committee (VDC) in partnership with Parents Teachers Association (PTA) on Tuesday February 17, Mr Maphane pointed out that often people in general decry lack of developments which come in the form of infrastructure and buildings.
He said as a result, they overlook the importance of having a nation of well-educated people who will be able to make use of these developments and even add more to them..
He noted that without the VDC taking a leading role to improve the level of education poor results will continue to be seen in public schools as has been the case in all schools in the village except for one primary school, Gasebalwe.
The school, he highlighted, has been consistent in scoring high marks. He said they are going to learners to take their education seriously.
Mr Maphane asserted that it has been a nationwide concern that parents were not playing any part in their children’s education, often leaving everything in the hands of government and teachers to see to it that their children were getting educated.
He explained that time had come for each person to add to government efforts in ensuring that good results were attained. In addition, he noted that there are many places which are far away from service centres and said this should not be a discouragement for one to work hard on their education.
The Mayor urged students who have not done well in their junior and senior secondary examinations to work hard to improve their results through distance education.
VDC chairperson, Mr Ledule Baraki explained that when they were elected in 2013, they visited all the schools in an effort to help produce outstanding results. He said during the visits, they realised that most students did not understand why they were attending school.
Some students, he explained, upon being asked what they aspire to become after completing their schooling, often gave disappointing answers like wanting to be employed at Ipelegeng, a job which does not require any qualifications.
Such responses, he said, prompted them as the village leadership to take action and assist the students to make sound decisions which in return will help them achieve their goals in future.
He nonetheless stated that although such gatherings required funding to organise, they are determined to seek sponsors to make the fair an annual event for all completers from primary, secondary and brigades. The workshop was held under the theme, A Road Map to success. ENDS
