Dimension Data to employ Kgalagadi residents

17 Feb 2015

The managing director of Dimension Data, Mr Duncan Pie, says residents of Kgalagadi will benefit from the company, which has been commissioned by Botswana Fibre Networks (BOFINET) to construct an underground optic fibre line.

Mr Pie said in an interview that his company would construct a 360 kilometre underground optic fibre infrastructure that would connect Kgalagadi South to the Trans Kalahari optic fibre ring, bringing optical fibre connectivity to villages between Sekoma and Tsabong.

He said it would benefit residents of Kgalagadi as Dimension Data would employ locals and guaranteed to make the ratio of foreigners to Batswana 1:12.

He said employment opportunities would keep the youth off the streets and from bad indulgences as idle hands were the devil’s tool. He revealed that they would buy their resources locally adding that they would purchase fuel worth P8 000 monthly. As a result, he said local filling stations would benefit and in the process boost the economy of the country.

The managing director applauded government for implementing fibre citing that it would create an enabling business environment. The move, he noted would make it easier and convenient to do business in Botswana and the rest of the world through effective use of internet.

The optic fibre infrastructure, he said would improve internet and telecommunications as main internet servers would be easily accessed. Furthermore, Mr Pie stated that services such as banking, renewing of motor vehicle licences and revenue services would be swift compared to in the past when people were inconvenienced by the poor system. Mr Pie said the expected time frame for the project was six months, but with the swift pace that his team was working, it could be completed within four months.

He promised that the project would meet specifications. One of the board members of Dimension Data, Mr Potlake Maine urged residents of Kgalagadi south to make use of the fibre connectivity, more especially for business and online studies services as that would improve their living standards and augment uplifting the economy of the country.
