328 teachers without institutional housing

11 Feb 2015

About 328 teachers in Gaborone secondary schools do not have institutional housing, the Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development Dr Unity Dow has said.

Answering a question in Parliament, Dr Dow said there were no plans to offer the teachers housing allowances as they were governed by the Public Service Act.

She said the current conditions of service for public employees did not provide for housing allowances for employees who were not allocated subsidised government housing.  The assistant minister said her ministry expected 72 additional houses in April to offset the current shortage of accommodation.

Gaborone North MP, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa had asked about the number of teachers without accommodation in Gaborone secondary schools and whether there were plans to give the teachers housing allowance.  He also wanted to know about plans to address the issue of accommodation for secondary school teachers in Gaborone.
