Centres set up for Malawi aid

10 Feb 2015

The Society for Malawians living in Botswana has set up centres in Gaborone, Francistown and Selebi Phikwe to enable donors to give to Malawi's flood victims.

Speaking at a press briefing in Gaborone recently, the chairperson of the society, Mr Madalitso Khupe said people continued to make enquiries on how to make donations hence the setting up of the centres.

Mr Khupe said they aimed at supporting the less privileged people and orphans and promoting the sharing of different cultures amongst others.  Currently, the focus is on people who had been affected by floods.

He said the southern part of Malawi experienced heavy rainstorms from late December, which affected 15 districts.  About 79 people had been reported dead and 153 missing and around 200,000 students were not able to attend schools because of floods which left many people homeless.

Mr Khupe said that they were humbly asking for both international and local disaster relief.  He said  those who wished to assist from Francistown, Selebi Phikwe and Gaborone, the contact numbers are 71603192 and 72931392.

For her part, the chairperson of Botswana Media Women Association Ms Keabonye Ntsabane said to realise the dream of Botswana of being a compassionate, just and caring nation they would try to give aid to the affected. ENDS
