Tough year for boxing
08 Feb 2015
The Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) is anticipating another hectic boxing calendar in the next coming months.
Speaking on the sidelines of the first ever interclub boxing tournament to be staged this year, the association’s publicity and information officer, Kenny Maragana said they were intending to use the next few club tournaments and the highly anticipated Best of the Best tournament to select a team that would represent the country in regional and international assignments.
The local pugilists are bracing themselves for the April Zone IV tournament, the Africa Championships that will be staged in August, the quadrennial All Africa Games pencilled for Congo Brazzaville and lastly the closely contested World Championships which will be hosted in Qatar.
In their last participation at the All Africa Games which were played in Maputo, Botswana put up a historic performance by clinching three medals, courtesy of Oteng Oteng, Mmoloki Nogeng and Gomotsang Gaasite.
Botswana had sent seven boxers to the tournament. In what promises to be indeed an action packed boxing calendar, boxers met in a well-attended 41 bouts tournament hosted by the University of Botswana boxing club.
New impressive faces, old, tried and tested boxers displayed their acumen in front of a packed UB Student Union Hall.
SSKB boxing club sensational boxer, Onkarabile Scara Mothibedi showed little respect for former national team ace boxer, Tirafalo Seoko when he won on an anonymous decision.
National champion Oteng Oteng had a mammoth task dealing with little known Mafika boxing club youngster, Opelo Modungwa. Modungwa was unlucky when the judges split decision favoured his opponent.
Francistown based Robby Botshelo reproduced his last years magic and beat Thabang Motsewabeng in what many regarded as a rematch.
Despite his hard hitting jabs and physical stature, Motsewabeng failed to convince the judges that he indeed scored points against Botshelo who was relentless the entire rounds.
Mmusi Tswiige of Prisons continued his good run when he became too hot to handle for Western Bobeilwe of SSKB.
The youngest of the Bagwasi brothers Kabelo also displayed his usual superb form against the tried and tested Alpheus Farmer scoring all the three points. ENDS
