Optic fibre network to boost connectivity

Botswana has taken a solid step in bringing connectivity closer to more people.
Speaking at a ground-breaking ceremony of the construction of a 325 km long optic fibre cable from Sehitwa to Mohembo which is worth P76 million recently, the Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo said that this project will expand Botswana‘s national fibre network backbone.
He said the project entails upgrading of the current microwave system with fibre optical network system that has a 20- year lifespan.
‘’These optic cables will facilitate and enhance connectivity to even greater levels thus enabling service providers to reach their customers more effectively,’’ he said
He said that they have approximately over 6000 km of optic fibre systems that are being owned and managed by BOFINET.
He highlighted that during 2014/15 financial year, government provided P400 million for the development of a further 1000 km national backbone and local access optical fibre network.
The Member of Parliament for Ngamiland, Mr Thato Kwerepe said that this was a great development for the people of Okavango as it will help them to be technologically advanced.
He further pleaded with the minister to take into consideration the upgrade of the bad roads in the Okavango district. ENDS
