Kgalagadi District will host this year’s International Languages Day
The district's acting coordinator, Ms Malebogo Mosala saidin an interview that the event, themed: My Language, My Pride, had been billed for Middlepits kgotla on February 21.
She said preparations were going well, adding that everyone involved in preparations was working around the clock to ensure that the day would become a success. Minister of Youth, Arts, Sports and Culture, Mr Thapelo Olopeng is expected to officiate at the event.
Ms Mosala said the day had been set aside by UNESCO for purposes of preservation and promotion of local languages amongst all member states. She pointed out that the annual event started in 2008 and Kgalagadi was the eighth district to host it.
“Other than just promoting linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism, the event also seeks to promote other cultural elements in the district such as artifacts, cuisine, attire music and dance,” she said.Kgalagadi district has diverse languages and amongst most prominent ones are Setlharo, Kgothu/Nama, Afrikaans, Sengologa, Sesarwa and Herero.
