Titans clash as league continues
22 Jan 2015
After a thrilling opening of the be Mobile Premier league second round recently, the action continues this weekend.
Tomorrow, the biggest game of the weekend will see the log leaders and defending champions Township Rollers host Lobatse giants, Extension Gunners, at the National Stadium at 7pm.
The encounter promises to set off more fireworks between the most supported teams in Botswana. Exactly a week after they were handed their first defeat of the season by Police XI, Mapalastina will get into the game with a win in their mind.
The team has failed to score a goal in their last game and their regular scorer and also the league top scorer, Jerome Louis will be aiming for nothing but the target at goal when the match goes underway. Rollers’ gaffer and three times league winner, Madinda Ndlovu will be aiming to solidify his squad after signing a couple of players in the January transfer window.
The Gaborone West- based side is currently leading the log with 37 points and 3 points ahead of second placed Mochudi Centre Chiefs.
Rollers can only write-off the Peleng giants at their own peril because it is the very same side which prolonged their league celebrations early last season with an amazing comeback, 10 minutes before fulltime.
Mapantsula will travel to the National Stadium again tomorrow hoping to pull the rag off their opponents feet. Dragojlo ‘Drago’ Stanojlovic’s side will be hoping for a far different outcome from the 7-0 beating in the Barclays Kabelano charity cup last year.
They rode through the storm of Rollers in the first round by holding them to a draw but will once again come under intense fire as they look on to take a side which has been a thorn in the flesh for most teams this season.
Gunners is sitting on the 8th spot with 26 points and they are still hoping for a better second round after holding Magosi to a 1-1 draw last weekend. With 11 points gap between them and their opponents, Mapantsula will aim for maximum points and increase their chances of returning back to the top 4.
Both giants have drawn in their last two league meetings and Rollers lost the first leg league match against Gunners last season despite having won the title. Another big game this weekend will see fourth placed BDF XI host second placed Mochudi Centre Chiefs at the SSKB Stadium at 4pm.
BDF XI will face a side which downed them 4-2 in the first leg. BDF XI is still in the race for the title which eluded them last season and a win against Magosi will intensify the battle at the top. Matebele won their last game by thrashing ECCO City Greens 4-1.
Magosi on the other side come into the game after a draw with Gunners last weekend and a win will be enough to get them back into the momentum of a title race.
The Kgatleng giants have not reached their form of recent years when they won the league title back to back and therefore the second round would be the only time to turn things around.
In other games, third placed BMC FC will take on the struggling ECCO City Greens at the New Lobatse Stadium at 345pm. Orapa United will travel to Selibe Phikwe Stadium to face Nico United at 4pm. Bottom of the league clash will see Letlapeng face Motlakase Power Dynamos at the New Lobatse Stadium at 7pm.
Gaborone United will host BR Highlanders at Molepolole Sports Complex at 4pm. On Sunday the only game of the day will see the confident Police XI which broke Rollers’s unbeaten streak face Notwane at Molepolole Sports Complex at 345pm. ENDS
