Students must get their certificates - MP

21 Jan 2015

Schools should not deny graduates certificates and references after completion of studies.

The Member of Parliament for Kgalagadi North, Mr Itumeleng Moipisi said doing so would deny pupils to progress.

Speaking during a kgotla meeting in Lokgwabe recently, Mr Moipisi said in most cases pupils were being denied certificates if they had lost books and other school properties, noting that the practice should stop as it iaffected students'  progression

He said instead school management should communicate with parents and sign agreements on how to settle debts. Mr Moipisi said during some of his tours he met 30 students at Ngwatle settlement who had accomplished their studies with no certificates due to unsettled debt at their former schools.

Meanwhile, Mr Moipisi expressed concern about poor education results in Kgalagadi North, noting that even though the situation had affected the whole country, Kgalagadi was among the least performing.

He said it was disheartening for parents to disregard their children’s education and appealed to them to attend parents -teachers meetings.

For his part Hukuntsi Sub District, principal education officer Dr Reginald Oats said transfer of students to other schools in the Southern region from Matsha College impacted badly on the performance of the school.

However Mr Moipisi informed residents of Lokgwabe that during last session of parliament he proposed introduction of tannery courses in Brigades around Kgalagadi North.

He said if the proposal was heeded it would benefit farmers in Kgalagadi as they would be selling the abundant leathers to brigades.

Meanwhile, Lokgwabe Village Development Committee chairperson Mr Segomotso Babeele decried shortage of police officers in their Village.

“Lokgwabe is a large and scattered village and one police officer cannot manage to cover the whole village as far as crime and other things that need police attention are concern, at least if they were three it could work out,” he said. ENDS
