Moremi calls for more resources on education

19 Jan 2015

Maun West MP, Mr Tawana Moremi says government has promised to work around the clock to put in place resources to achieve quality education in the next five years.

Addressing Toteng residents recently, Mr Moremi said although government put emphasis on quality graduates who could compete worldwide, the efforts were hampered by challenges of lack of resources. He cited lack of classroom facilities, lack of resources such as books, shortage of teachers and staff houses, which he said denied efforts of quality education.

MP Moremi said it had been about seven years that government had put on hold developments of new infrastructures and focused on renovation of existing structures.

He said government should not have halted developments for such a long time, noting that his party, the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) viewed the decision as an oversight on the part of government.

However, MP Moremi advised Toteng residents to take advantage of the challenge of lack of accommodation of public officers, adding that they could build houses and rent to government to help the situation and earn a living.

On other issues, Toteng residents complained about wild animals that continued to destroy their farms. The residents said it was sad that government does not compensate for destruction of watermelons by elephants to subsistence farmers, but only to commercial farmers. MP Moremi said the human-wildlife conflict issue was far from over since the buffalo fence, which was meant to restrain wildlife against domestic animals, failed to do so due to destruction caused by elephants to the fence.

However, he said the Ngamiland people were a people of cattle rearing as well as farming and it would be a challenge for them to give it up and follow the tourism and mining industries.

MP Moremi said the meeting with Toteng villagers was the first one as Toteng was now under Maun West constituency. The residents had decried destruction caused by wild animals, lack of cattle markets due to Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), lack of teacher staff houses and others. ENDS
