Ministry aware of unsuitabillity of Ghanzi airport location
15 Dec 2014
The Minister of Transport and Communications has told Parliament that he is aware of the unsuitability of the current location of the Ghanzi Airport.
He stated that, through the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB), feasibility studies were done in May 2007 and a new site identified and agreed with the relevant authorities.
He said the new site was located approximately 7km South West of the Ghanzi town centre and approximately 4km West of the Ghanzi District hospital. Mr Mabeo said the designs for the new airport (runway, terminal building, associated buildings and services) were done in December 2009.
He however noted that the project has not progressed due to financial constraints as this was one of the projects suspended during recession period.
MP for Ghanzi North Mr Noah Salakae had asked the minister if he is aware that the Ghanzi Township airstrip is located at the centre of the town which poses a serious risk to the residents. ENDS
