UB records 10 industrial court cases

The University of Botswana has recorded 10 industrial and seven high court cases submitted by employees against the university since 2011, the Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dr Unity Dow has said.
Responding to a parliamentary question, Dr Dow said the reasons for litigation included disputes over salary adjustments, challenging decisions to deny promotion, claims for payment of accumulated leave days, allegations of constructive dismissal and challenging decisions to transfer employees from one unit to another.
Of the 10 cases brought before the Industrial court, two have been dismissed, two withdrawn, one was ruled in favour of the university while five cases are still pending.
The status of the seven High Court cases is that two have been dismissed, one was withdrawn, two ruled in favour of the university while two are still pending.
Selebi Phikwe West MP Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse had asked the education minister to state the number of UB employees and former employees who have taken the university to the Industrial Court and the High Court respectively since 2011 and reasons for litigation. ENDS
