Schools pit latrines not totally phased out
15 Dec 2014
Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development constructs waterborne toilets in primary schools under the Primary School Backlog Eradication programme in all towns and villages where there is reliable supply of water, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development has said.
Ms Botlogile Tshireletso said in Parliament that in these areas, pitlatrines had been phased out as those found in use were demolished and replaced with waterborne toilets.
She however noted that in areas which were prone to water shortages, pit latrines had not been totally phased out as the construction of waterborne toilets was accompanied by a programme to construct few Ventilated-Improved-Pit latrines for use when there was water shortage.
Gabane-Mankgodi Member of Parliament, Maj. Gen. Pius Mokgware had asked when the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development would phase out pit latrines in schools as Councils were failing to manage or maintain them. ENDS
