Expatriate heads Competition Authority

11 Dec 2014

Parliament has been informed that the Ministry of Trade and Industry has 10 parastatals under its purview and all are headed by Batswana except for the Competition Authority (CA).

Responding to a question in Parliament on December 10, the Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Vincent Seretse said the oddly run headed parastatal was so because during the recruitment of the CEO, the mandate of the CA was carefully considered and CA issues were new and highly technical.

He said it was therefore important that the founding CEO be a competent individual with relevant expertise and experience needed to set up the Authority as well as advise the Competition Commission.

Mr Seretse noted that among Batswana who showed interest in the position, none of them had the experience on Competition Policy and Law.

Goodhope-Mabule MP, Mr James Mathokgwane had asked the Minister to state the number of parastatals that fell within his Ministry and how many of them were led by expatriates.

He had also wanted to know the intention of the Ministry with regard to localising these posts in line with the Localisation Policy of the country.ENDS
