Lobatse Town Council equips members
09 Dec 2014
Lobatse Town clerk, Ms Gabatlotlane Sekwakwa says it is important to train councillors to appreciate facilitating, organising and coordinating all council functions.
Ms Sekwakwa said this at an induction workshop for Lobatse Town Council (LTC) members recently.
The two-day workshop sought to impart knowledge to councillors and in turn share views on topical issues and highlight their role from a regulatory perspective.
She said the workshop followed the October general elections and the recent special full council where councillors set up the necessary council structures.
Ms Sekwakwa challenged Councillors to respect their title “honourable” saying it placed certain expectations on their personality, character and conduct.
“This dictates that you should be at all times, with your debates and decisions, be hounourable,” she said.
She also reminded them that their role and allegiances were not only for their respective wards but the town as well as the country, hence implored them to focus on real issues of national interest and development of the town.
She further implored them to disengage from their political differences and refocus their thoughts, energy and efforts on driving national developments.
Again, she implored them to uphold and defend the Constitution and other country laws and perform their duties diligently, honestly, fairly and to the best of their abilities.
The town clerk also encouraged them to stick by the oath they took in the previously held special full council session to be their road map and to benchmark against.
Councillors were also taken through the Local Government Act, standing orders, local authority, financing and development planning.
Meanwhile, Ms Sekwakwa urged both the political and administrative wings to work collaboratively to create synergies that would steer developmental changes of Lobatse.
“Let us all be in one mission of restoring investor confidence to this town,” she said. ENDS
