The Minister of Defence, Justice and Security, Mr Shaw Kgathi has encouraged staff from both his ministry and the National Museum to exercise so as to stay fit.
Speaking at a wellness day organised by the ministry in collaboration with the museum employees on December 5, Mr Kgathi said it was important for people to do routine checkups for sugar levels, blood pressure and other diseases.
Thus, he advised them to be mindful of what they eat as well as avoid high risk food that could be hazardous to their health. “Take lots of water to cool down your bodies so as to dilute the adverse hot conditions,” he added.
Going forward, he said his ministry would consider hosting inter departmental and districts competitions to engage in health and fitness. He also highlighted the need for equipped gym rooms in workplaces, especially in his ministry.
Activities at the wellness day included, aerobics, tug of war, egg and orange races as well as morabaraba and mhele. Officers took time from their daily duties to reflect on the importance of good health in the workplace.
They also had free education on retirement plan by Alexander Forbes and had a chance to interact with Motor Vehicle Fund, Cancer Association of Botswana staff.
The event emphasised the important role that the wellness day played in the workplace given that it was not only about physical exercise but fun. ENDS
