Heavy rains cause project delay

04 Dec 2014

Minister of Transport and Communications has informed Parliament that the tender for resealing, fogspray and road marking of Sebina junction to Tutume Road (70km) was awarderd to Ravines on May 27, 2013.

He also stated that the commencement date of the project was September 5, 2013 and completion date was on July 5. Mr Mabeo said the project was not on schedule; progress was affected by the heavy rains that were experienced in the northern part of Botswana late last year.

The other delay was due to poor management of the contractor on his works leading to under performance. He indicated that if the progress did not improve, a notice to terminate would be issued to the contractor.

He concluded saying that his ministry had since written letters to the contractor as required by the contract to warn him of his rate of progress.  In addition, he said that his ministry had issued the contractor with a notice to claim liquidated damages for delivering the project after completion.

Mr Mabeo was responding to what had been asked by Member of Parliament for Shashe West Mr Fidelis Molao who had asked him when and to whom the tender of resealing of the road between the Sebina Cross and Tutume was awarded and to state the time frame for the delivery of the project; and lastly whether the project was on schedule; if not what action had been taken to ensure the delivery of this project without further delay.  ENDS
