Park construction followed council guidelines
04 Dec 2014
The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr France van der Westhuizen, has told parliament that he is aware that in 2011, the Gaborone City Council awarded a contract for the construction of a park at Old Naledi at a sum of P2 176 067.04.
He stated that the final cost of the park was P1 497 770.40 and not P2.4 million. He said the award of projects such as the park was made by a committee of council using guidelines contained in the Local Authority Public Assets Disposal (LAPAD) Act.
The assistant minister further said he was not aware of any anomalies that occurred in the award of the contract; hence no further action was taken.
MP for Gaborone North Haskins Nkaigwa had asked him if he was aware that GCC spent over P2.4 million in the construction of a small park in Gaborone South (Naledi Central) and that it was observed that the price for the construction of the park was overpriced.
He asked him what had been done to address the anomaly and what action was taken against the perpetrators. ENDS
