03 Dec 2014

The Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Thapelo Olopeng has urged Team Botswana to be good ambassadors.

Team Botswana will represent the country at the African Union Sport Council Region (AUSC) Under 20 youth games that will be held in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, from December 5-15.

The minister said this in Francistown on December 1 during a send-off ceremony for the team. He encouraged the young athletes to deliver and emulate their brothers and sisters, Nijel Amos and Amantle Montsho who were making a living out of sport.

Minister Olopeng said the time had come for them to bear in mind that their success at regional and continental level would motivate them to take sport as a career. Furthermore, Minister Olopeng encouraged participants to stay away from performance enhancing substances.

He also implored leaders of sport to remain united in the knowledge that their collective aspirations and destiny as a team were greater than their individual differences. Team Botswana is made up of athletes from nine sporting codes namely, athletics which has visually impaired athletes, basketball, boxing, football, judo netball, swimming and tennis.

For his part, Botswana National Sports Council chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng advised participants to strive for higher performance in order for them to take the country to greater heights. ENDS
