Station commander calls for caution on roads

02 Dec 2014

Good Hope police station commander, Superintendent Mogotsi Kwapa has urged road users to be cautious so as to prevent accidents.

He said there were three major aspects that road users should be cautious about; a person whom safety began with, road and the vehicle.

Speaking at the road safety commemoration day in Lorwana recently, Supt Kwapa said if there was confusion between the above aspects, accidents would occur.

He said the continuous commemoration of this day allowed the Ministry of Transport and Communications to respond to the need of road crash victims for public recognition of their loss and suffering, provide an opportunity to demonstrate the scale and impact of road deaths and injuries and the urgent need for concerted effort to reduce these tragedies.

Supt Kwapa said the effects of road transport resulted in loss of productivity, loss of capital due to damaged goods, loss of life and that state economy was affected due to medical expenses and road repairs.

Statistics on the number of road traffic accidents recorded around Lobatse area showed that in the years 2012, 2013 and 2014, a total number of 208, 431 and 159 accidents were recorded respectively.

Giving welcome remarks, Kgosi Kefitlhile Kgwakgwe thanked the Road Safety Committee for choosing his village as the venue for commemorating road safety, adding that it made him happy as this event is usually taken to bigger villages than his.

He advised all to use the road responsibly and be brave enough to ask over speeding drivers to slow down.  ENDS
