UB Act addreses conflict of interest

The Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dr Unity Dow has admitted that the fact that the chairperson of the University of Botswana Council also doubles as the university’s lawyer may result in a conflict of interest.
However, she told Parliament on November 24 that the University of Botswana Act regulated how the council dealt with conflict of interest as and when it arises.
“The University of Botswana Council is made up of 32 members of diverse backgrounds and interests. Conflict of interest is to be expected under such circumstances,” she said in response to a Parliamentary question.
Gaborone Central MP, Mr Phenyo Butale had asked whether there was no possible conflict of interest emanating from the fact that the Chairperson of UB Council doubled as its lawyer. ENDS
