After losing the AT&T Monnakgotla sponsorship, the women football super league has managed to continue for two seasons now without any funding.
Many teams have pulled out due to financial struggles but the ones that remained managed to strive through all the challenges. The lack of proper funding in the league saw most of the games played in the dusty conditions despite the league being the top one in women’s football.
In an interview, Women’s football public relations officer, Alex Malete said the league was going well despite the main challenge of having no funding. He said they were still looking for a sponsor and they were hopeful to find one soon.
Malete commended the teams for doing their best to honour fixtures regardless of the financial problems, adding that the issue of referees failing to honour the matches has not surfaced this season.
The 12 teams in the super league have begun the 2014/15 season already and 7 games had been played and it has proven to be competitive especially at the top. Last season’s runners up, Township Rollers, defending champions Double Action and Prison are currently leading the front pack in the log respectively.
Township Rollers which are on their top form this season have not lost any game and they have amassed a total of 19 points. Rollers have drawn only one match and have managed to stay ahead of their rivals Double Action till now.
Their recent win was a 9-0 thrashing of newcomers Mexican Girls last Saturday and tomorrow at 4pm they will travel to Newlook Primary school in Lobatse for a game against Meat Girls.
Double Action however have not had a bad start despite being defending champions and they are currently on the second spot with 16 points. They have lost only one game at the hands of league leaders Rollers and their last win was a 5-1 hammering the bottom placed Vicomates.
They face Prisons at Bosele Primary School in their next match on Sunday and a win for them will ensure they keep up the race with league leaders.
Other title contenders this season is Prisons which has managed to accumulate 16 points in total and sitting on the third spot behind Double Action separated by goal difference.
Newcomers Makufa have put up a good fight in the league even though they are new to the league competition. They currently sit on the sixth spot with 8 points and they have lost 3 games. They will tackle Untouchable on Sunday at Mogofitshane JSS.
Other fixtures this weekend will see Mexican Girls take on UB Kicks at GWest JSS, South East Girls will meet Vicomates at SEDYA grounds in Ramotswa, Kanye Swallows will host Big Sisters. All matches kick off at 1600hrs. ENDS
