Man torches himself to death

12 Nov 2014

Residents of Raserura ward in Mochudi are reeling in shock after a 38-year old-man burned himself to death following a misunderstanding with his sibling.

Mochudi police's Assistant Supt Wazha Zambezi confirmed the incident, which occurred on Saturday afternoon (November 8).

He said early investigations had shown that after the misunderstanding, the man locked himself in the house, poured paraffin over his body and torched himself.  Asst Supt Zambezi said by the time the police arrived at the house, the man had already sustained serious injuries.

He further said it took time before the police could assist him as they had to force their way into the house.  The man, he said, was rushed to Deborah Retief Memorial Hospital where he was referred to Princess Marina Hospital and later Bokamoso Hospital where he died.

In another incident, Asst Supt Zambezi said a man in Boseja ward lost goods amounting to P15 000 in a fire after he forgot to put off a candle on Monday evening. He said the man who escaped unhurt said he lit the candle after electricity cuts off and only woke up to fire in the house.

Asst Supt Zambezi implored Batswana to be cautious when using candles during electricity blackouts advising them to always put them off before they sleep. ENDS
