BOMWA congratulates elected women
30 Oct 2014
The Botswana Media Women Association (BOMWA) has congratulated women who won seats in the October 24 general elections.
A press release from BOMWA stated that the association also thanked the voters who voted for women with confidence, “as this shows that voters are aware of the importance of having women at decision making level more importantly in politics.”
“What frustrates is that only few women won bulela ditswe and this contributed to them not to be well represented in the national election with a good number,” added the release.
Since Botswana was still lagging behind in getting 30 per cent in decision making and power sharing at political level, as signatory to the 1997 SADC declaration, the association had therefore appealed to the President to give priority to increase a good number on women special nomination.
BOMWA, as per the release, was positive that the President also has a concern of not having adequate women at this level and is aware that democracy will be not nourished with the unbalance of women.
That gap alone, the release says will compromise the development of the country. ENDS
