Agriculture important to rural economy

10 Mar 2013

Agriculture has a central role in Botswana’s rural economy, hence a majority of rural population depends on it for livelihood and employment.

Answering a question in Parliament on March 7, Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Mr Oreeditse Molebatsi said the statistics brief of 2009/10 revealed that 1 465 people were employed by the agricultural sector excluding government in the Maun region, Okavango, Ngamiland west and east as compared to 999 in 2009.

The MP for Okavango, Mr Bagalatia Arone had asked the minister to state the number of people employed in the agricultural sector in his constituency excluding government workers.

Mr Arone had wanted the minister to align his answer with the view that “agriculture has a central role in the rural economy”. ENDS
