Batawana celebrate kgosi's birthday

21 Oct 2014

Maun main kgotla was the beehive of acitivity on Saturday, October 18, as Batawana celebrated Kgosi Tawana Moremi’s 45th birthday.

The kgosi’s mother, Ms Debbie Moremi said Kgosi Tawana emulated his late father, Kgosi Letsholathebe II who was described as ‘prince of peace’ at the time of his death.

Ms Moremi said her son showed works of compassion at a tender age during his school days as he once walked on behalf of a fellow student which she said led to Kgosi Tawana’s demotion as a school head prefect.

Kgosi Tawana’s regimen (mophato) called Matsaakgang representative, Mr Botlhale Majatsie said the kgosi’s birthday celebrations was a way of showing respect to their chief who was enthroned on July 1, 1995.

Mr Majatsie said the kgosi’s birthday celebration was a step to reawaken the role of mophato which had been forgotten. He said their intention was to make the celebrations annually as well as to revive other cultural practices through matsosangwao regiment.

The Batawana senior representative, Kgosi Charles Letsholathebe said Batawana were on a mission to revive their fading culture.

Kgosi Letsholathebe said the birthday celebration was a sign that the tribe loved their chief, and that the chief has not abandoned the people in his other engagements as he had properly consulted before he left.

In his remarks Kgosi Tawana said the day was a part of history which will be noted as part of the Batawana history. Kgosi Moremi implored his clan to support him since he was advocating for their rights.

He said as Batawana they would not allow government or politics to divide their tribe. However, Kgosi Moremi implored the Batawana to protect the authenticity of their kgotla and should not use the kgotla for political battles.

He informed the people that he was still involved in handling other matters but he said once he was done he will return to his seat. ENDS
