When purpose becomes recipe for success

14 Oct 2014

Unlike most elderly people who at the age of 60 or above prefer to stay home and look up to their children to provide for them, Mr Ngano Nkaelang of Tutume is still actively running a poultry business for a living.

The old man never allowed his age or what society perceives about aging to deter him from undertaking a project that helps him to remain self-reliant. His values for hard work, passion and perseverance made him to stand strong and progress well despite the challenges.

HE started his poultry production business three years back and so far he does not regret a single moment of operating such a business.

The passion for this kind of business developed after watching an agriculture programme aired on Botswana Television every Monday which disseminates information about different aspects of agricultural activities

The old man specialises in selling broiler chickens and the demand for the poultry meat in his neighbourhood is satisfying, he says to BOPA in an interview.

“Business is doing well, I started off with fifty broiler chickens and the demand surpassed my ability to supply my customers, therefore I had to increase the number to 150,’’ he said. Mr Nkaelang says he purchases one-day-old chickens and takes care of them up until they are seven weeks old and ready for sales.

He indicates that once the chickens are ready for sales each is sold for P50 and on a good day he can raise P400; his customers are mostly individuals from his neighbourhood.

So far his hard work has paid dividends as he has managed to send his children to school, adding that serving diverse customers is always a walk in the park for Mr him.

“Yes I have to acknowledge that once in a while I deal with difficult customers especially that my business operates on compassion but with my sense of humility I remain on top no matter the circumstances,” he says

Clearly, Mr Nkaelang’s sense of good purpose and hard work has proven to be a recipe for a good life and though challenges do crop up, the old man is certain that he has no intentions to kiss his business goodbye any time soon. Instead he plans to diversify it and sell manure generated by these broilers. ENDS
