Golfers will this weekend be competing in the Stanbic Bank Independence Trophy golf tournament, which is sponsored with P80 000 by the bank.
The championship that will be held at Gaborone Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday (September 20-21) is one of the leading tournaments staged by Botswana Golf Union annually.
The competition is open to both men and women golfers with the men’s event divided into three categories; the A-division played in handicap 0-9, B-division played in handicap 10-16, and another division played in handicap 17-24.
The ladies section is divided into two categories, being the A-division played in handicap 0-15 and B-division played in handicap 16-30. Botswana Golf Union secretary general Mpho Kelosiwang says the independence trophy is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the unions’ calendar.
“This is a medal competition with the winner determined over 36 holes of play in the two days. Over the past 47 years the tournament has proven to be extremely popular, this year is not an exception,” Kelosiwang explained.
He added that they were expecting the championship this year to draw around 150 golfers. Kelosiwang pointed that BGU has agreed with Botswana Ladies Golf Union to make lady golfers eligible to play in all BGU tournament, with Botswana Open being the only exception.
Kelosiwang explained that the move was aimed at improving the quality of ladies by giving them competitive opportunities. ENDS
