Half loaf better than nothing

10 Sep 2014

A saying that a thousand miles journey starts with one step inspired a group of six Sefhare based women who, although they currently earn little, their association is optimistic that someday they will be reaching the top part of the economic ladder.

In an interview, the group’s representative, Ms Cecilia Florick, 34, explained that their syndicate was formed in 2008 and it was named Phumphukwe women’s Association. Ms Florick said their association focused on various projects such as backyard gardening and paper mashing, among others.

“Sometimes we can earn as little as P200 each in a month,” Ms Florick revealed, adding that it is better to earn this little amount than just sitting at home, folding arms and “calling yourself a destitute.”

She said when running a business, one should not expect immediate returns because in any kind of business, what pays more was hard work, passion, dedication, patience and understanding the project that one ventured into.

“Today as I speak, I would say because of lack of these five qualities, our group lost 24 members,” says Ms Florick, adding that when Phumphukwe Women’s Association was formed in 2008, it had 30 women, both youth .The majority have since pulled out.

She pointed out that by the time they began each, one of them contributed P20 to make a startup capital; today they are sponsored by Sister Frances Boston of Roman Catholic Church in Sefhare. Ends
