Team BONA teaches juniors lesson
08 Sep 2014
Team BONA walloped their juniors, MaLittle 43-19, in the My Spar Superstars finals at Botswana Netball Association courts on September 7.
The five-week tournament saw players selected from across the country to form six teams as they competed for a spot in the national team. Team BONA, which comprises of national team players, was on another level against their little sisters: the Under 20 national team.
MaLittle seemed to have the game under control in the opening minutes of the first quarter as they went neck to neck with their seniors but as the quarter unpacked, the veterans discovered MaLittle's weakness and pressed and blocked them on the centre court and hence reaping them apart.
The first quarter culminated with BONA girls leading 9-3 as they pressured the young ones to lose possession numerously. The second quarter saw BONA defenders Florah Keeditse and Ntebogang Motlakaloso having a field day in the shooting circle as they easily scooped balls from shooters Margaret Banda and Violet Oneile.
Experience came in handy for BONA girls as they took charge of the game while their juniors could not blend. Nevertheless, MaLittle defenders Sarona Hans and Letang Mogotlhwane were a marvel to watch as they troubled their seniors in the circle deflecting and jumping at every ball targeting the goal mouth.
Hans eventually snatched the most valuable player of the game as she was just on another level maneuvering around the court and dashing back to the shooting circle to block those shots.
BONA had a variety of shooters to throw in as they switched Tebogo Radipotsane for Hilda Binang and later took out goal attacker Tumisang Bagidi for Portia Rasekhumba.
MaLittle’s shooting power went dead in the last quarter as shooter Gosegonna Kelefetswe and goal attacker Natasha Maribe could not come to the party, BONA defenders walking all over them.
Several players from MySPAR North, South, MaLittle, FutureStars were on Sunday selected to play against TeamBONA of which some of them will be roped in the national team camp.
The national team is currently on camp for the World Cup qualifiers to be played in Gaborone from September 14.
Botswana will face Tanzania, world ranked number 14, Uganda world ranked number 15, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia ranked 22, 26, 27 respectively.
Unseeded Kenya and Swaziland will seek to redeem their pride and finish in a better spot as they compete for ticket at the World Cup in Sidney, Australia next year. ENDS
