No Ebola case in Botswana - ministry

31 Aug 2014

The Ministry of Health has dismissed allegations that there is an Ebola case in Botswana.

A news release from the ministry stated that to date, Ebola cases were only registered at West African countries being Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and recently Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The release stated that the ministry, as the custodian of health in the country, was the only authority that will notify the public on any health related issue. “All public health facilities are on high alert,” it further stated.

The ministry further informed the public that there were necessary measures in place in preparation for the epidemic such as screening at ports of entry as well as isolation facilities in place, in case of any suspected cases.

The ministry advises the public to avoid or postpone travel to Ebola affected countries. The ministry’s statement came in the wake of allegations circulating in the social media claiming that there was an Ebola case in the country.

The allegations further stated that the ministry personnel at health facilities lacked knowledge about how Ebola disease presented itself and were in a panic mode and seemed not to be generally informed about the disease. ENDS
