28 Aug 2014

The Shashe Mooke born Mr Mmilili Santu (24) will next week join other young Batswana who will be leaving for China to pursue post graduate studies after they were granted scholarships.

He will be studying for a two-year Masters in Mining Engineering at Wuuhan University of Technology in China. This was revealed by the Director of Institute of Industrial Health and Safety Management (IIHSM-Botswana), Mr Tirelo Phalalo at a farewell dinner organised to bid him farewell at Cresta Marang Hotel.

The youngster, an employee of IIHSM-Botswana would undergo a four-year programme, wholly sponsored by the Chinese government. He is expected to finish his two years programme and then proceed to PhD level should he pass his master’s degree.

“The offer came after Santu was selected as the suitable IIHSM-Botswana employee by the institution’s board of governors after he arrived from United States of America where he was pursuing his first degree in the same field at Missouri University” , said Mr Phalalo.

Mr Phalalo said the company was confident that Sentu will raise the company name and profile and become an icon amongst young Batswana abroad.
IIHSM-Botswana, he said, accessed the scholarship through networking with the Chinese Engineering Hub.

He said they were registered as private company in 2008. Currently, they have offices in Francistown and Gaborone and they have also acquired land in Letlhakane to build a state of the art institution with programmes which will close the skills gap that have been identified in Botswana and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Its main business focus is education and training in mining related work place, training, occupational health and safety and soft skills training.

He mentioned that the institution has 42 accredited training programs with BQA, the major ones being mine health and safety, occupational health and safety, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001:2008, fire risk surveys and more.

Also core to the business, Mr Phalalo said, is the consultancy services which include S.H.E.Q systems implementation and auditing, occupational hygiene surveys and accident investigation services.

For his part, Santu assured his colleagues and parents that he is determined to work hard and come home qualified. He encouraged all young Batswana to take their studies and careers seriously and to be on the lookout for opportunities. ENDS
