No more old coins
26 Aug 2014
The Bank of Botswana has announced that, with effect from August 28, 2014, the old coins will be demonetised and cease to be accepted in any transaction as they will no longer be legal tender.
A press release from the bank states that the coins will be exchangeable for equivalent value only at the central bank in Gaborone and Francistown for five years until end of August 2019. Bank of Botswana introduced a new family of coins early this year.
Some business and shop owners have already put notices at their premises, notifying customers that they will not accept old coins after end of August, 2014. Ends
