McCormick wins Kgale Cross Country

Gaborone Cycling Club’s Sean McCormick set an impressive 2:43:42 record to beat his competitors in the toughest off road Kgale Cross Country trail series .

The 37-year-old off road rider who is fresh from participating in the most intriguing off road in the world cycling calendar, the ABSA Cape Epic, beat a bunch of other hopeful winners in the mould of Jabu Tabulane, Hezekiah Sibanda and Neville Van Zyl to the top spot.

McCormick was followed by Garth Armstrong and on the third spot came Tumisang Ramasankate. The Cape epic is a physically taxing off road challenge that spans over a period of eight days in rough forest paths and sandy terrains.

The Kgale Cross Country series which is on its third edition attracted a number of competitors over the two days at the weekend. The duathlon started off on Saturday August 9 with a 21kilometre running trail and completed with a 63kilometres mountain bike challenge on Sunday August 10.

In the 63 kilometres off road challenge which did not include the running trail impressive youngster Thato Madimabe emerged victorious and claimed the P2 500 first prize money followed by Victor Makgwelo and Botswana Railways Boipuso Masepe in the second and third spot respectively.

In the ladies category Reza Armstrong became the only rider to reach the finishing point and bagged the first prize. Speaking on the sidelines of the race, chief executive officer of Scania Botswana Freddie Hennop said they were impressed as event sponsors by the level of attendance and enthusiasm displayed by riders.

He said as Scania they were interested on healthy living and was part of their HIV/Aids awareness campaigns. He described the event as a family outing as they had several families attending with riders as young as 4-years-old. Jacks Gym provided the aerobics part of the event. Ends
