11 Aug 2014

University of Botswana Centre for Continuing Education recently donated nine standpipes to some families in Francistown.

During the official handover of the standpipes, the director of University of Botswana Centre for Continuing Education(CCE)- North, Dr Bantu Morolong praised the centre’s health and wellness committee for its humble effort, which she said was in line not only with Botswana’s Vision 2016 pillar of a compassionate, just and caring nation, but also to the university’s mission and above all the centre’s mandate of extending educational and developmental opportunities to those outside the mainstream of education and development process.

Dr Morolong said the centre pushed the University of Botswana’s principle of university community engagement, stressing that they were threads which connected or bridge the gaps between universities, communities and industries through outreach and development initiatives.

However, Dr Morolong urged the stakeholders to assist the government on its initiatives of alleviating poverty and advised the beneficiaries to take good care of the water pipes in order for them to add value to their lives.

The regional manager for the centre, Mr Selelo Mosweu stated that their initiative is aimed at trying to improve the lives of people in their communities.

He however, expressed the concern that it was not an easy task to complete the project, but praised the social and community development officials for their assistance in identifying the beneficiaries.

Ms Bawani Mutshewa, the health and wellness coordinator for the centre stated that CCE is part of the community and therefore, what affects the community affected them.

She said this was a way of giving back to society, stressing that one cannot be well if he or she has a troubled soul.

For his part, Kgosi Paul Motshwane of Gerald Estates applauded the centre and said that it was already way ahead in realizing the country’s Vision 2016.

He called on other organizations to emulate the centre and help those who are less fortunate. Ends
