The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlhogile Tshireletso, says the department of wildlife and national park is mandated by the Wildlife Conservation and National parks Act of 2002 to manage Moremi Game Reserve.


Answering a question in Parliament, on behalf of Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, she said local stakeholder involvement was encouraged through initiatives such as park management committee, which included the communities and private sectors.


Member of Parliament for Maun West,Tawana Moremi, had wanted to know as to why to date there was no local stakeholder involvement in the management of Moremi Game Reserve as there is for other protected management areas in the North West District(Chairman’s report-NWDC March 22-30 2010) full council meeting and why the recommendation that the Department of Wildlife and National Parks lease the Moremi Game Reserve from the Batawana Tribe(Moremi management Plan WP/NAT/2/14 II(59) chapter 5 section 5.1 was not followed on.


However, Ms Tshireletso said the ministry has no record of the Moremi Management Plan WP/NAT/2/14 II (59) which has been alluded to, and she would welcome a copy of such documentation from the Member of Parliament. ENDS
