03 Aug 2014

President Lt Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama, cabinet ministers, permanent secretaries and other dignitaries were among people who gathered at Partial to refurbish and replace equipment at the children’s park.

Giving the objective of the day, Acting Minister for Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Mr Shaw Kgathi said this is a continuation of what the President conceived and announced at the November 2010 State of the Nation Address.

Mr Kgathi noted that during the State of the Nation Address, the President announced that all ministries and departments should embark on community service day, which was then implemented immediately.

He said Cabinet Ministers have so far conducted 13 community service days while the Ministry of State President has conducted 22 at various places that range from as far as Kalkfontein, Jwaneng and the greater Gaborone.

Among other things, he said the activities included building of houses, construction of backyard gardens, refurbishing of dikgotla, tree planting, making of donations in terms of equipment, cleaning up campaigns and construction of sporting grounds, particularly at Mmokolodi School.

Mr Kgathi said the whole concept of community service day is about social responsibility by getting public officers out of their offices and go and serve the community.

“We are also using this opportunity to mobilise resources by creating focus in terms of bringing the leadership of the country to those places that have been neglected,” he said.

On the other hand, Mr Kgathi said they have mobilised companies to pledge support to the said activities, adding that the day’s activities were made possible by donations from Pak Steel and Limkokwing University.

Pak Steel, in collaboration with Limkokwing University, donated equipment and building materials worth about P20 000. In an interview, director of Pak Steel, Mr Syed Addas said the donation included provision of expertise. ENDS
