Progress visible at Khoemacau mine

31 Jul 2014

The exploration manager at the emerging copper producer, Khoemacau Copper Mine, Mr Titus Chanda says a lot of developments have been done at the site because the mine management is focused on the success of the project.

Giving a perspective on the overall progress of the project during a stakeholders’ tour of the site on July 30, Mr Chanda indicated that activities at the Khoemacau Copper Mine had now been successfully completed, stating that the 70 000 metres infill drilling programme at the North East Fold and Zone 5 had been completed.

Mr Chanda said work on the project was positive and their efforts continued in earnest with the multiple studies required meeting expectations. He said a lot of drilling had been done and they believe there was significant resource potential (both opencast and underground) and plans to fast-track the development of the project in order to complete the feasibility study during 2014 and quickly move the project into construction thereafter are on going.

Mr Chanda said they had managed to come up with targets of what was to be done in subsequent years, saying that drilling had helped them to look at resources and improve them. He said if there had adequate funding, they could do more things at the site.

In an interview, Mr Rob Day, the project manager said all the spade work had been done and the project would kick start as soon as the mining license was issued.

He said the idea is to start mining deposits in Zone 5 and later the North East Fold belt since Zone 5 gives 12-15 years projected mining life. Mr Day said their model is to go for underground as it looks to have great potential.

The management is crossing fingers that the department of mines gives them a go ahead so that they start a construction plant beginning of next year. All the necessary documents would be submitted to the department of mining in September this year for approval.

Khoemacau Copper Mining (Pty) Ltd previously known as Hana Ghanzi Copper (Pty) Ltd, a subsidiary of Cupric Canyon Capital Plc (“Cupric”) has been exploring and developing the Ghanzi-Chobe Copper Silver Project (Khoemacau Project”) and is located in the Kalahari copper belt within the Ghanzi and Ngamiland Districts. The project would produce copper and silver.

Giving a drill hole summary, senior exploration geologist at the site, Mr Botanani Muyoba explained that the borehole at Zone 5 has exhibited two mineralisation horizons or pulse same as previously discussed in HA-914b-D and HA-915-D.

He said the mineralisation pulses are at depths of 637.40 to 652 and 658 to 668 metres. In both horizons, the copper sulphide mineralisation zonation comprises of good chalcopyrite, bornite, covellitte and chalcocite with sphalerite only present in the first horizon.

Mr Muyoba observed that the mineralisation is also pre-dominantly cleavage hosted with minor occurrences of bedding parallel ductile-shear calcite-quartz veins containing seritized country rocks in some places. ENDS
