Tobela children walk 24km to from school

29 Jul 2014

The acceptable number of kilometres primary school pupils should walk daily to access education is five kilometres which translates into 10 kilometers to and from school, Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Keletso Rakhudu has said.

Speaking in Parliament, he said the pupils residing in Tobela travelled 12 kilometers daily to access education in Shoshong and that the return trip made it 24 kilometers.

He said Tobela was a recognised village of 214 people, according to the last census, adding that at the moment, there were 19 children who walked to Shoshong.

Mr Rakhudu said the ministry was constrained to put up a school at Tobela due to lack of funds. He said funds permitting, Tobela will be considered for two classroom school because of the number of the students in the village.

He was responding to questions from Shoshong MP, Mr Phillip Makgalemele, who had asked the minister to state the acceptable number of kilometers primary school pupils should walk daily to access education. ENDS
