Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development is aware that Bontleng, Babusi and White City are some of the oldest Self Help Housing Agency (SHHA) residential areas in Gaborone.

Assistant Minister Botlogile Tshireletso told Parliament that she was also aware that some of the roads in these residential areas were not tarred or paved and had inadequate street lighting as well as storm water drainage system that cannot adequately resist floods.

Ms Tshireletso further said due to budgetary constraints, the ministry has not been able to accommodate upgrading of “these major infrastructure developments as part of the NDP 10.” 

However, she said the ministry through Gaborone City Council will consider these on priority basis alongside other deserving ones during NDP 11.

She was responding to questions asked by Gaborone South MP, Mr Kagiso Molatlhegi, who had asked the minister if she was aware that Bontleng, Babusi and White City are some of the oldest Self Help Housing Agency (SHHA) residential areas in Gaborone.

He also asked whether the minister was aware of the bad internal roads, poor lightning, poor sewerage and poor storm water drainage in those areas and he wanted to know when the infrastructure will be upgraded. ENDS
