Demolition not meant to infringe upon rights
28 Feb 2013
Demolition of structures for squatters is not meant to infringe upon or deny the concerned persons the right to own land.
The Minister of Lands and Housing, Mr Lebonaamang Mokalake told Parliament on Tuesday that people whose structures were demolished were still entitled to own land and they could formally apply for land to the respective land authorities.
He however noted that their demolished illegal structures did not give them priority over those who were already on the waiting lists.
The minister was answering a question from the Member of Parliament for Maun East, Mr Frank Ramsden who had requested him to explain whether the people who were deemed squatters and as a result lost their properties through the demolition programme will be given plots in their lifetime. ENDS
