DWNP took over Moremi Game Reserve in 1979
17 Jul 2014
The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) took over the administration of the Moremi Game Reserve following a Presidential Directive; CAB 25/79 of October 1979.
This was said by the Minister of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Mr Tshekedi Khama, when responding to a question in Parliament from Maun West MP, Mr Tawana Moremi.
The minister said he was unable to categorically state the amount collected as fees, since DWNP took over the administration of the reserve, as the information was not readily available.
However, Mr Khama said DWNP had collected an amount of more than P48 million over the last five years as entry fees for the Reserve. Prior to 1987, he said DWNP did not remit park entry fees to Land Boards, adding that “there is no legal requirement for DWNP to remit park entry fees to Land Boards so this does not happen.”
Mr Moremi had asked Minister Khama to state the amounts collected as fees for the entry into Moremi Game Reserve since the DWNP was seconded to its management and administration.
Maun West MP also wanted to know why the DWNP stopped remitting the fees to the Land Board in 1987 (TLB/B/14/3 IV (51) and whether the DWNP had resumed remitting the fees to the Land Board. ENDS
