Siele aware of road situation in Kanye
15 Jul 2014
The Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Peter Siele says he is aware that a section of the road from Makepe’s business property in Kanye through Phata yoo Ramontshiwa to Kgosing is too narrow and in a bad condition.
Responding to a question in Parliament from MP for Kanye South Mr Abram Kesupile, Mr Siele said that the road is narrower than the standard road width because it is located in the older part of the village which is heavily build up.
Minister Siele said during construction of the road in 1994, its width was narrowed in order to avoid unnecessary demolishing of adjacent properties adding that since the road had now exceeded its 20-year design life, it was no longer economic to maintain it but should rather be reconstructed.
He said due to budgetary constraints, the road will neither be redesigned nor reconstructed during NDP10 but would be considered for inclusion in NDP11 with other competing priorities.
Mr Siele said because major maintenance cannot be carried out due to budgetary constraints, periodic maintenance is still being carried out through patching potholes and spot improvement. MP Kesupile had asked the Minister if he is aware that the road from Makepe’s business property in Kanye through Phata yoo Ramontshiwa is too narrow and some parts severely damaged.
Mr Kesupile also wanted to know when the Minister would consider its redesign and construction with the current plan period and why this busy road has been left to be in such an irreparable state especially on the steeper side of its climb. ENDS
