Ministry to train more citizens in medical specialities

Assistant Minister of Health, Dr Gloria Somolekae has told Parliament that the ministry has a total of 125 medical specialists of which 26 are citizens.

Answering a question, Dr Somolekae stated that the ministry had 79 doctors on training for specialisation. Also, she explained that the ministry had 20 slots for medical specialisation this financial year who are all expected to complete their specialisation in the next five years.

Dr Somolekae said the specialties that are currently being followed are in the areas of internal medicine, family medicine, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, radiation oncology, general surgery, maxillofacial, neurosurgery, pediatrics, pathology, general surgery, critical care and anesthesia, ophthalmology, oral medicine, nephrology, cardiology, rheumatology, anesthesiology , pediatrics dentistry oral medicine and public health.

MP for Francistown West, Dr Habaudi Hubona had asked Minister of Health to state the number of citizen medical specialist in public health.

Also, Dr Hubona had wanted to know how many more are expected in the next five years and the specialty lines they have followed. ENDS
