Parliament has been informed that the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture is aware of a pupil from Etsha 13 Primary School who excelled at the Confederation of School Sport Association of Southern Africa (COSSASA) games held in Zimbabwe in 2013.
Answering a question in Parliament on behalf of the Acting Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture, Mr Vincent Seretse, Health Minister Dr John Seakgosing said Kamogelo Kayongo participated in the High Jump code during COSSASA games in 2013 and her current record is 1.37 metres.
He said Kanyongo is currently in Standard 7 and consultations with her parents are ongoing through the Botswana Primary School Sport Association to enroll her at one of the centres of sport excellence for 2015. Dr Seakgosing further said once the athlete has been enrolled in one of the centres, there will be assessment and assistance by the Sport Science sub-committee of Botswana National Sport Council.
“The committee is responsible for among others athlete development and through this arrangement the athlete will be provided with psycho-social support and training methods with a view to improve her performance,” he said.
The minister was answering a question from MP for Ngami Mr Taolo Habano, who had asked the minister if he is aware of a pupil from Etsha 13 Primary School who excelled in the COSSASA games in Zimbabwe in 2013 and if so the minister should state if there are any provisions in place to prepare the child physically, mentally or otherwise in order to develop her skills.
