School results decline worrisome

An official in the Ministry of Education and Skills Development says without advanced high quality training services aligned with the labour market the economy of the country will go nowhere.
Coordinator of Education and Training Sector Strategic Plan (ETSSP), Mr Shadrack Majava said this during a workshop attended by primary and secondary school headteachers and their deputies at Kanye education center on Monday, July 7.
The aim of the workshop was to address the issues of declining of school results in Botswana for the last 10 years.
He said education is a basic foundation for the progress of society and the state shall seek to ensure, foster and endeavor to spread it, adding that this needs the aspirations and abilities of individuals.
Mr Majava stated that strategic plan offers diverse areas to realise their full potentially and prepares them for success in a changing world that witnesses a considerable increase in complex technical requirements, in addition to enabling them to participate in international competiveness.
He further said ETSSP is based on scientific and systematic principles that balance reality with the desired goals.
The ETSSP, he said, outlines outcomes, projects and programs that will facilitate the steady progress toward fulfilling the vision of wise leadership.
“It is imperative that we all commit ourselves to the ambitious goals of this strategy and exert the best efforts to make it a reality’’, he said.
Mr Majava further stated that there has been outcry of poor results among Tswana medium schools in which some parents are pointing fingers at teachers while teachers blame parents whom they said never attend PTA meetings. ENDS
