Council to continue services at Chichi Mosenekatse

01 Jul 2014

The Southern District Council (SDC) has promised to continue providing services to residents of Chichi, Motsenekatse and other settlements in the area.

Speaking during the ongoing council meeting in Kanye, Mr Mompati Seleka said he was not aware of the decision to halt the provision of services to the settlements.

He explained that the decision to discontinue provision of social and community development services and the Ipelegeng programme to residents was not taken by the council.

He further explained that residents should be served by the nearest service centre, which is Molapowabojang, especially because there was collaboration between districts.

Mr Seleka was reacting to a complaint raised by councillor Nelson Letshabo, who had requested an explanation why services were halted to the said areas. In his submission, Mr Letshabo said it was cheaper for residents to get services from Molapowabojang rather than being forced to travel to Kgomokasitwa or Moshupa. He added that the settlements has existed since 1933.

On other issues, Mr Letshabo urged the government to prioritise upgrading of the Lobatse-Jwaneng road as it was the second busiest road in the country with high volumes of traffic, especially trucks from other countries.

He also advised the government to construct lay-by stops between Letlhakane and Molapowabojang to enable drivers to pull over at designated points along the road.

“The absence of lay-by stops has resulted in damage to the road as most of it is cut or damaged at the shoulders,” he said. He also asked the government to maintain the fence along tes road to keep out animals. ENDS
