Company helps address waste challenges

29 Jun 2014

Conservation Safari and Charity (CONSAFARITY) has partnered with Boyeyi Primary School and the North West District Council (NWDC) to address the challenge of waste.

The director of the company, Ms Theda Knyphausen said their aim was to empower children and to teach them about the value of waste, which included recycling and using waste as nourishment in gardens.

She said school children were trained to sort waste into eight different categories of metal, paper, glass, plastic, plastic bottles, non-recyclable and compost. Ms Knyphausen said it was the norm for schools to burn litter.

She added that their partnership would ensure that after sorting litter, Gecco company, which has a recycling plant in Maun, would collect the paper, metal and plastic to be recycled while the compost would be used for the garden at schools.

The non-recyclable materials would be collected by the NWDC to the landfill, which she said was advantageous for the council to collect less waste to minimise the issue of lack of transport.

“We have a strong belief in conservation, children are the future and when empowered they can impart the knowledge that rubbish has value even at home,” she said.

Ms Knyphausen pointed that waste was a huge challenge in the world, especially in the rural areas. However, she said Batswana were appreciative people who accept new ideas. The programme has been introduced at Bana Ba Letsatsi, Boyeyi and Andrew Wellio Primary School. ENDS
