24 Jun 2014
Head teacher of Shashe River School in Tonota, Mr Motlhapisa Seganabeng has commended one of the teachers at the school who voluntarily financed a project in the school.
In an interview recently, Mr Seganabeng said for the teacher to embark in such as an exercise demonstrated that the spirit of volunteerism was still alive in the country. He said the project, an assembly square, was an initiative of the teacher, Mr David Tembil, a Ghanaian.
For his part, Mr Tembil said he came up with idea after realising that a gathering of students he led (house) had no meeting place whenever they had an occasion, noting that the school was divided into five houses for administrative, disciplinary and academic purposes.
He said the housing systems enabled students to get better attention from teachers as they were reduced into smaller groups.
The square had a dimension of seven metres and was constructed using stock brick, pavement bricks, cement, river sand and all these including labour was financed to the tune of P3 500.
Mr Tembil said he was inspired by the fact that the school itself was started through self-help initiatives.
He said the house he led, the Limpopo, consisted of nine classes out of 42 overall classes in the school, adding that each teacher belonged to a house and there were about 300 students and 22 teachers in each house.
The houses meet on Wednesdays and at any other time when there was need. At the meetings, he said they discussed various issues such cleanliness, academic and performance monitoring issues among others.
Mr Seganabeng implored other teachers to draw inspiration from such gestures. Ends
